With my mother being born just a few walks from San Sebastian it was inevitable that it would be my business to keep an eye on the music scene in Spain. In fact I can tell you that it's full of promise at the moment. I'm not sure whether that's down to the stature of Sonar or the inspiration from Spain's beautiful attributes but I'm certain that these two acts will become familiar names in the near future. The third would have been Sidechains but we posted about Alex's side project, The Requesters, last week. Although perhaps I should have written about these numerous weeks ago and you can shoot me if I'm just repeating what you've already heard but you know because of all the copycats, I'm sadly growing tired of all this bassline so the sun fueled enthusiasm really tickles my fancy right now. We say here if you lose the love, it's time to move on so here is one of the ways we're doing that. On the Fluokids label Fools House, Delorean have impressed me greatly with their "Ayrton Senna" EP which is infinitely better than their older productions. It's flavoured all over with summer; a recipe of beaches, love and skinny dipping, so I can't stress enough to get it if you're new to this. John Talabot, who also features on the EP with a remix, brings us a reprise to sooth the aches and pains after all that dancing. If you can't get away this holiday, just shut your eyes and you'll see what I'm seeing.
Ever the enthusiasts and always up for a rave, we dust ourselves down from last nights party to bring you yet another H.U.G.E bass heavy track. It's been made headline news across the blog world that Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound label has launched a new release: a project between Riton and Primary 1 under the alter-ego Who's This? The result of which is something fresh from the studios in London creating collective acts of whooohooos once that first synth stab kicks in. Now we know the original is near perfect so the unenviable task is laid down to the producers to do "Who's There?" the justice it deserves. Our favourites In Flagranti and L-Vis 1990 are given the challenge and we're sure they'll both come up with something special although until then we'll have to get together for Doorly's remix. He takes his dubstep wand and waves it so you have something if you want it just that bit harder for the clubs. Or just if you want something a little bit different. Or just perhaps if you've seen a P.Y.T and want them to join you with your grindin'. Whatever tickles your fancy, no judging.
Okay perhaps we've been a little tough on Victoria for her debut album "Hands" but you know she's a very hard working and talented girl. Yea we felt the whole ordeal was a sell out, one big richly funded campaign to make as much money as possible, but I guess she's entitled to as a performer to try and achieve as much success as possible right? We can't hold anything against her for that, and so we wish Little Boots all the best. Good luck girl! Although what we do look forward to are the flurry of remixes that come with each release. As of yesterday I'm sure you've seen the versions by Rusko, A1 Bassline and the Buffetlibre/ Sidechains collaboration? Well instead I thought I'd take the newer minimal/ tech-house route with Style Of Eye, the guy on form at the moment. We started posting about Linus last year when we heard his album "Duck Cover & Hold" and he's continued to grow from strength to strength alongside his fellow pioneers, Popof and Noob, in this modern style of accessible techno music. Linus did an Essential Mix for the BBC not so long ago so make sure you check that out and keep both eyes on his future productions. Yes I missed the opportunity for a terrible pun there.
Six months on and many tracks played, I haven't got my dog Duke to sing to a song since the 12 inch of "Gimme back my love affair" by Sister Power. See even though he's a pedigree German Shepard, Duke is a big softie at heart and likes to jam to cheesy disco and inspiring creations like M83. You know I taught him well. So when I finally got round to listening to my latest playlist, I was pleasantly surprised to hear Duke trying to sing to the remixes of Memory Cassette by Acephale Records favourite artists. The five they chose were Friend, CFCF, Weird Tapes, Sail A Whale and Shadow Self with each and every one of them being as beautiful as if Audrey Tautou was a guardian angel. It's a testament to the remixers that they were able to be so successful in doing the original track justice and on that note I suggest you visit the Acephale Records website and purchase that release. Worth it.
The results are in, my partner in crime at the Mixmag and Tiga parties from the weekend Sofie is suffering greatly from an achey head, sore dancing feet and severe tiredness. What do we do to restore her lively self and save the girl from the misty bank of miserableness? Scream for help? Call wise man Dick Van Dyke? Stretcher to Starbucks? Well cue the remedy from Neon Gold Records who provide the arsenal for cheering anybody out of their slums and into a world of absolute happiness. Always the good guy John Cusack turned into a baddie when in High Fidelity he said: "Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?". Well somehow I don't think he considered a third option, that he didn't listen to the right kind of pop music? Move in Wolf Gang, a band formed around Max McElligott, who have the ability to make your blues go away with a barrage of bliss pop and addictive flair. But what if the clouds are too thick to disperse? Well here are two extra remixes of Wolf Gang's excellent release "Pieces Of You". The Disco Bloodbath track lives up to his namesake by being a true Balearic affair and pop padawans, Yes Giantess, provide a gem somewhere along the lines of Russ Chimes and Frankmusik. Neon Gold Records are really something special that you should follow so please get yourselves down to one of their future parties, you're guaranteed one hundred percent unadulterated fun. I promise.
Last summer at the L-Ektrica party, Akab, in Rome a wise girl said to me there were too many imitation acts spoiling the whole electronic scene. Maximal è morto she ranted. At the time a few eager fans of Bob Rifo and his vegetable named project were quick to dismiss her claims as a mere effort of 'hypsteria' but she was certainly right about the scene needing a new buzz, a new craze and a new love. See Aristotle's analysis on phenomenon and change included looking at the final cause telos: the objective and purpose of an entity, so with music being one of my favourite forms of entertainment, I'm glad there's change to keep things fresh and fulfill its potential. I'm sure by now you've seen two to three directions in which the electronic scene can take and one possibility are the big sounds coming from the Sound Pellegrino crew. Founded by Teki Latex and DJ Orgasmic and touted as the slick brother to French label Institubes, Sound Pellegrino have forged together a family consisting of Renaissance Man, Zombie Disco Squad, Momma's Boy and Harvard Bass but it's Douster who's been making many good signs. Okay yea you couldn't get any more opposite but with a sweet blend of tribal beats and nonchalant style, there goes your winning formula. Give it a try.
You know that saying, you wait for one bus then two come along? Or something like that... In this case, the second bus is coming from Nu Style Records, heading towards Twisted Bitz and who knows where this line ends up. For a first release from spanking new label this is quite stomping and here is hoping it is setting a tone for what is to come!
It's been so long that I can't remember what I did for my fifteenth birthday. Okay that may have been five years ago but seriously them years were a haze, maybe we went paintballing? Go-karting? Ate loads of birthday cake? I'm not really that sure but it all seems rather tame compared to Rinse's 15th birthday celebrations, the London pirate radio station that plays dubstep, UK garage and grime. They say that they're going to release a song everyday counting down to the event and to start off they've chosen the ever impressive Skream. A huge name and a track high in demand sound like the perfect way to kick off the birthday celebrations. If you like it as dirty as a cut-price Albanian brothel I'm sure he's your man who can supply you with the goods to fulfill your needs. You can count on me to keep an eye on any other heavy treats they may wish to share, welcome to dubstep palace people.
At the start of each month we always look forward to comparing other people's charts with our own, so it was inevitable once Aeroplane made a mix of their favourites that we'd beg, steal and borrow to get hold of them all. Despite having a name often coined in a schoolyard in a derogatory manner, Bent have been an British electronic act for exactly a decade. I'm guessing you're probably scratching your heads thinking if you recognise the name or not, but chances are your memories will be jogged once you hear their tracks. I swear I heard one of their songs in Fake Blood's essential mix (if anyone can confirm that for me that would be brilliant). They've got a "Best Of" coming out and usually with these I think bloody hell who even cares. Stop trying to make even more money by milking mouldy songs. Par. Although we're always entitled to an exception and born with this release are some awesome remixes. One being from London disco wizards, Mighty Mouse, whose track featured on the aforementioned Aeroplane Top 10 chart for June. You can easily see why since it's got all the entities required to complete the nu-disco (hate that word) formula. Italo lungs, cosmic heatrbeat, you name it. Seriously don't be put off if you've heard neither of these names, this is worthy of your time.
It's a well known fact at the Funkism headquarters that Arveene & Misk are one of our favourite discoveries of the past two years, and that's saying something considering we uncovered the joy of strip- volleyball. It's simple, you drop the ball you drop an item of clothing. Inevitably I was hyped to get a chance to interview Arveene Juthan and appeal to his naughty side, so it probably comes to no surprise that we gossiped about Ed Banger members, ginger ale and Lady Gaga's big donkey dick. Note that we did the interview at the start of May which is why you'll see topics related to that month. In fact a double note for those of you outside of the UK, "The Inbetweeners" is a show over here about four unpopular sixth form students who fail miserably at life and Susan Boyle was one of the stars of "Britain's Got Talent". The reason for the delay in getting this up was to have it nearer the release of the "Hells Bells/Blow Your Whistle EP" and future projects. Incidentally you can buy the track "Hells Bells" here (and watch the video) if you truly want to please the crowd but to ease the wait for their debut album, here are some remixes I think you might enjoy.
There's always one day of the calendar we look forward to most. No it isn't naked Wednesday, nor is it the day when we all group together and play one huge game of strip Twister. Not even payday. Instead it's the date when Moda opens their doors to the public for a night brimmed with alcohol and dancing. Their record label, Moda Music, has the sole ambition to get artists out there who are well ahead of the game and our friends over at the Moda headquarters are hyped to share this track from their electrifying new release out at the start of the week. The Requesters, a combination of mind cogs between Oriol Riverola and Alex Sidechains, are an exciting new duo to come out of Spain having hugely impressed at the Sonar festival. On the EP there are four MASSIVE tracks; one of which is "Pianobytes", a 90s inspired piano fetish molded into a format we can eargasm to. Head over to Beatport, definitely one to check out.
Since 7th July we've been wearing black, mourning the end of the road for dance punkers Damn Arms. My good friend Kate has refused to leave the house and our dog Duke even shed a tear, so it seems the future is bleak without Yama Indra and Tim Sullivan leading the way for breezy disco house music. Well, you'd have thought so, but now there's a new duo coming out of Australia going by the name of Ted & Francis. Time will see if they help mend our broken hearts but I'm sure with their touch of tropical pop, they'll help us in adopting the new wave of Australian talent. Besides, all is not lost with Damn Arms. For a start Yama Indra already has his G.L.O.V.E.S project well under a way where he's recording an album set to blow our minds whereas Tim Sullivan is putting his efforts towards the exciting Das Moth. Let's not forget that former members Simon Parker and Ben Browning are working with Lost Valentinos and Cut Copy. So yea, we're weeping now Damn Arms has gone but I guess we can ditch the black and look forward to the birth of the multitude of merrymakers soon to hit our soft spots.
It's undeniably hard to keep a single name on the end of our lips. Just as a child smitten by the shiny new toy they can't live without, we can be fickle like that. It could be that the anticipation of a whisky fueled night, dodging the techno stabs, drives us to prepare our ears with Djedjotronic. And then perhaps the morning after, all we'll require is a playlist made up entirely of Miles Davis. It's rare we'll have a double dose of any artist in a short period of time but Australia's Flight Facilities are close to changing that ritual. Their Lowbrows remix embarks on an eight minute voyage through sun, spirits and sex that will keep you hooked for that next fix. In fact we're so addicted to Flight Facilities that we're planning a special day reserved just for the talented duo. I guess that means we'll be stocking up on candy floss and duck tape then.
here at the funkism house, it's no secret that we're all massive fans of leo zero. yes there's a ritual everyday at four o'clock where we have to listen to his florence and the machine remix, yes we'll pray to the disco heavens for exclusive original tracks and yes we think leo zero is the solution to all the world's problems. it's fitting that he's the creator of grand musical journeys that feel as if they have the urge to tell stories like the wise man who lives in a cave at the summit of a mountain. here it seems as if leo zero has bat for lashes by the strings, having her reenact the memories of the past and the dreams of the future. it's that ability to restructure, manipulate and shape the original formula that aids leo zero in producing a truly wonderful twelves minutes.
it's 3.12 in the afternoon and we're half-naked sparked out on the sofas. yes our ears are still ringing from m83 after being mesmerised by anthony gonzalez' live act but we all lay here with our faces of content knowing it was well worth the trip down. that was yesterday. today it's 3.12 in the afternoon and we're half-naked sparked out on the sofas but this time with our faces of excitement. i admit that at first i was a bit laissez faire about the prospect of attending the ed banger 6 1/2 birthday party tomorrow but you know the more i think about it, a night containing the likes of feadz, dj mehdi and krazy baldhead is something along the lines of special. so we have another night of sheer decibels to look forward to, which means our music for the day must be on a different tangent. two of my favourite acts of the year, holy ghost! and classixx, combine together for this gem of a creation and it makes for the perfect solution to cure our koko aches. for me this is the only sound i need for the summer and instead of generating some sort of useless analogy to describe the music, just listen to the track and let it inspire you with its brilliance. thank you green label sound, you're aces.
the london based curb crawler (i'm not entirely sure if he searches the night for streetwalkers or not) l-vis 1990 has been feeding the summer with his hefty bites of hyper-bass. now i'm not too sure on the story behind the alter ego l-vis 1990, is his name elvis? is it a tribute to the king? or is it just a random creation born from years of watching skanky dance videos? it's hard to tell. although i guess what does matter is when he's responsible for shuffling our shoulders and getting our grind on. the video for "come together" evokes numerous bad thoughts which provides some reasoning as to why it was number one in my july charts but mostly it's down to his infectious sound. his latest remix of lemonade, single out on the 20th, is another example of a l-vis 1990 bomb ready to be dropped and i'm prepared to be hit full force. this is how he rolls, so you better watch out.
there's an intriguing long list of people we'd undeniably send love letters to. one being dee d. jackson because she inspires us to build a spaceship out of sweet wrappers so we can fly over to her disco brothel. perhaps even dick van dyke so we can flatter him into letting us hide in that ridiculous moustache of his if we ever happen to get into trouble. nobody will think to look there. personally i'd blow a virtual kiss to anna karina since it's impossible to avoid falling in love with her in "le petit soldat". although this has kindly been brought on by the swedish duo air france who, along with christina roos, show their adoration of gothenburg. in fact they love their hometown so much they've expressed it through three different types of media on this website. part II, the song, is inspired by fond memories to create this beautiful track which is soaked in their summery dub disco sound. delicate, heartfelt and sun-glazed with their creative touch. this is their art and i'm glad we're allowed to witness it.
more often than not rejection can be a bad thing. for instance when my friend emma broke up with her boyfriend, she locked herself indoors and cried herself into a tub of ice cream. why do girls feel the need to do that? does ice cream contain a magical attribute i'm unaware of? what is the point of plain flavours? too many questions i need answers for. perhaps what i do know is that rejection can also be a good thing. in this case my ben & jerrys addicted friend found her perfect match just a month later. in fact when you look back to last year when aeroplane's remix of "william's blood" found itself left out of the release, it brought them the acclaim and hype they thoroughly deserved. if i'm being honest simian mobile disco's latest single is a little disappointing, especially after hearing a few special tracks off their new album, and there's little to hope for if the chicken lips version hits all the wrong buttons. however this remix by the london duo, allez-allez, has turned the original into something i love. this is kind of more gorgeous than natalie portman blowing a kiss. i tell a lie, i'd catch that kiss any day of the week.
this month we're going to be taking a road trip through europe and i'm sure we can expect some laughs, arguments and perhaps a whole lot of alcohol. the necessary ingredients for a couple of weeks worth of unforgettable mess. don't worry though, i'm taking my laptop to various wi-fi points (since i can't live without the internet) so i'll still be updating on here. although below are some of the songs i'll be listening to throughout the journey.
