whether it's girl/boy troubles, changes to plans or some other kind of niggle, there's always a point where you end up with too much on your mind that it's hard to cope. although i think i've found my solution to this- jogging. in a bid to detox all the rubbish i've taken in over the past year, i thought it would be a good idea to start running and it really does give you the time to think. sometimes i think too much. perhaps i'll drift off in to a scrubs-esque land where i replay episodes in my head, maybe air-band when nobody is watching, and other times i might remember back to when i was little. yesterday i thought, i wish i was one of those people who chose the music for adverts. i imagined djedjotronic's remix of major lazer as the song to advertise those inspectors who investigate if your partner is having an affair or not. i think i'd do a pretty good job to be honest. incidentally, this remix doesn't have to be the soundtrack to infidelity hunters, it's more of a sunsetter. you, the colourful backdrop, and next door's naughty housewife who's had it away with her gardener. i'm sure you get the picture.
Rock, Pop, Indie, Electronica with some synth action and an Apple laptop as their drummer gives, Two Door Cinema Club an alternative pop genre name tag, that doesn’t really work?!
I could go on for hours, telling the world that he never was what they said he were. But I wont this time. As Marky said earlier today, everyone has the right to have their own opinion.
back in the olden days when people were just realising who the teenagers were, when diesel awarded duke dumont best remixer and there was that small group called ed banger appearing on everybody's tracklists, i remember acid girls actually had a blog. in fact i also remember that i used to think acid girls (new single out now on kitsune) were a scantily clad LSD fuelled female duo who went round causing chaos on the streets of berlin. sadly not, you've got the much more stable greg and jamie behind the brains of their forward thinking electronic music. it's possible that you'll remember them from their excellent appaloosa and mini viva remixes? their take on the colorado based duo, 3OH!3, is on the cusp of dark progression but still with a hefty enough bite that you're kept hooked for the full 6:43mins. and i guess i'm
When I see an artist I want their live set to express what they feel their own production portray. Over the past year, I have kept a lazy eye over the ongoing productions by Skullduggery. When I first heard their live sets at nights like Fresh Till Death (just like the cool Hip Hop kids say) and Wonk I was excited to go home and see what their productions are like. Thinking they would refuel me with dance energy and give me flashbacks from the great night out.
Some friends have left me this summer to work in New York, another friend leaves me this week to start his placement in Dublin. Already the situation is not setting up for the best summer. The fact I am yet to sort myself with a job (not that I have been looking very hard) leaves me with a few spare buttons in my left pocket and a yo-yo in my right. As a result, I have a lot of free time on my hands and I often find myself looking at what the people on my twitter are getting up to. Cue the beat-making machine Hostage. Alan Hostage often posts links of his newly mastered tracks up on his twitter, in 320 kbps goodness, the latest track that has been laid down = Soundboy.Hostage - Soundboy [yousendit]

i feel like christmas has come early and i'm dressed as santa claus with this one. well minus the beard, costume and weight. then perhaps without the reindeers, decorations and the naughty little grinch who sneaks around when everybody is asleep stealing your presents. i think that's a given, but my point is i'm over the moon that i'm able to share this with you all. this time our canadian friends, NROTB, have taken their huge club sound and applied it to the new single by pony pony run run, a french power pop band signed to the lovely 3ème bureau music label which previously provided a temporary home for crookers. their signature track "hey you" i know has already been embedded into many summer playlists but you know that's all very well for the days, so what about for the nights? that's why i seriously recommend you download this remix by NROTB as it's the perfect answer. even moreso now that the label loves it.
There's one thing you should know about the Funkism house, alongside our James Brown shrine we have one for the lovely Ellie Goulding where we worship her quavery voice. Statues, photos, love letters, the lot. Though we have every reason to be showing such affection because, albeit the female singer-songwriter market is largely saturated, Ellie has dug herself a trench and looks to be the only girl out there with the longevity to secure your hearts year after year. Her style is intriguing with a sound akin to a blend of folk, electronic, pop and dubstep- how does that work I hear you say? Well deceivingly it's a formula to her magic. Fortunately I was able to get the chance to interview Ellie Goulding a couple of weeks back and we talked about 70s afro porn, musical chairs and superhero powers. Below is a selection of her tracks that you can listen to before, during or after the interview so you can decide for yourself. You'll have to thank our Neon Gold Records and Discodust friends respectively for shedding the light on these. Please show your support for Ellie on her myspace.
Are we all in an agreement that an artist/ band should never have two albums that sound the same? Since Clark's release, Throttle Furniture in 2006 on Warp Records he has been seen to refine his sound in a way that is much more driven towards pop music with Clark’s latest album Totems Flare. Clearly we have a man in agreement! It has been eight years that has seen five albums and few EP releases thrown in for good measure but with Totem Flare (due to be released on 13th July) we shall have the battle ground for an elegant meeting of past and present sounds.A new album that sees Clark finally getting there, already know to be technically gifted he was not quite down melodically. Bring in his pal Bibio to help sort him out and we may just have one of the albums of the year. The track has such a smooth BUT big BUT gentle drop at 2.10, oh my!

one of the number 1 best selling dubstep artists on beatport last year was DZ and he makes me wish i was a badman. he makes me wish i wouldn't shave for a week, turn up to the club with a backpack full of my favourite cds and play some dirty beats until everybody's so tired that they collapse. although i'm not that
i'm in love with things that work when they really shouldn't do. like, if you go to the beach and it starts to rain yet you still have a great time. perhaps you try something you hate which turns out to be something you like or maybe those films where they are so bad that they ultimately become the funniest you've seen in a long time. them sort of things. so really an udachi dubstep remix of an m83 brain child shouldn't work in the slightest. but it does. you may recognise udachi from his work with tommie sunshine and ac slater but you need not worry if you don't because this should get you into his cross atlantic wobbles. incidently you should definitely check out his original track "jellyroll" which i know has leaked but i'm not sure on the permission, maybe i'll ask him some time and try and share it with you guys. m83 has always been a sure fire favourite with me and his album last year was a masterpiece yet again. udachi picks one of anthony gonzales' creations and reworks it into a more club friendly slow burner which should be enjoyed with a bottle of corona.
somehow i foolishly forgot to post these remixes ages ago and i wish i could tell you why but i seriously had some sort of malfunction. perhaps i hadn't been eating my vegetables? or maybe it was bad karma for watching the TMF channel for 15 minutes? either way i'm making sure you're not missing out these by being better late than never. fuck buttons "street horrrsing" album received numerous amounts of praise last year (pitchfork's number twenty) for creating a shake of ambient experimental noise. it's not as scary as it sounds, you've just got to think gang gang dance and animal collective to find a similar wavelength. the andrew weatherall remix removes "sweet love for planet earth" from it's plastic casing and adds a vigorous edge to the already epic creation, suited for an alternative summer vibe. the same goes for fuck buttons reworking of the lovely fever ray, one half of the knife, where you're left with the hard decision to risk losing yourself in the hypnotic loop or not. just make sure that you take a ball of string so you can find your way back.
somehow i've managed to earn the reputation for pure filth on twitter and i can't possibly think why? perhaps it's all the talk about air groping, stockings and sex dice? don't you think it's far more interesting than nattering on about what you've just eaten? in fact it's probably rubbed off a little on the trending topics with these discussions about three words you say after sex and turning the beatles songs titles into porn flick names (personally i liked "fist and shout"). although i have to say, i'm not the only one. jared from molasuperpoco is far worse than me! and jay from decibel sometimes joins in on the filth by sharing naked annie mac photos, true story, but he says one day he'll get me some sort of counseling for this. well guess who's now naming their remix after a sexual act that involves multiple partners and one willing recipient!? though i definitely do recommend you download and listen to their newest remix, it's dirty! a bit like old skool crookers or foamo on a guilt trip, well just think, the sort of sound that will explode in the club. by the way blogger, this is still a child friendly blog.
Two crazy kids from Leeds, we give you funkers the chance to meet funkisms newest friends, Eskimo Twins.ESKIMO TWINS: Both of us have pretty a wide ranging taste in music. We love metal, rock and 60's pop alongside techno, house, electronica and electro etc. I guess our sound hints at the rougher musical elements you might find in a Slayer song, fast rhythmic changes, dischordant harmony, stuff like that.
In our formative teenage years we were both pretty hardcore into metal. We still like our music heavy and that probably reflects in places, but equally we're all about kick drums and vocoders. Kraftwerk's songwriting approach to electronic music is second to none. We like to have a more 'song' based approach to our music, not always just your typical Big Club Tune structure, so in that respect they have influenced what we do.
ESKIMO TWINS: Our setup is based around 2 synced laptops, some synths, midi controllers, FX units all running together through a big desk. It's a mix of sequencing and live instrumentation; everything that can physically be played live by two people, is played. We try to make the live show as hands on as possible. One of us will be playing the basslines on the Moog whilst the other plays synths, edits, arps, or samples via triggers: then we'll swap round.
The set is organised so we can jump around tracks, extend sections and jam live as we go, so it's never quite the same each time we play it. It's more fun for us to actually play instruments rather than tweak controls on a laptops. Adding that element of un-predictability engages the audience more. With live electronic music, the sounds involved can be quite strange & ambiguous, but if the audience see you hit a key on a synth and hear the resulting noise, it makes it clearer for them what we do and keeps them involved. It also makes things interesting for us, we'd definitely get bored just pressing play on a computer and adjusting a couple of filters here and there, the way we do it is much more fun. There's always lots of running about and bad dancing on stage, we want to give the audience something to look at.
FUNKISM: We like to think we keep a bit ahead of the game here at funkism, so we cheat and ask artists such as yourself who we should be looking for in the next coming year.
ESKIMO TWINS: Joe and WIll Ask? have been making a name for themselves for a good while now, but we think they'll really be making a serious impact on the scene over the next year. We haven't seen them live yet, but their productions are great, a good mix of groove and melody. Doorly is blowing up at the moment. He's an excellent DJ and his productions and remixes are smashing it. His Toys EP will be out in July on Wax:on Music, expect big things from him over the next 12 months. People Get Real are producing some great Techno at the moment, and Youth Attack! are coming out with great remixes and tracks. On a non-electronic tip, The Old Romantic Killer Band are gonna do big things this year too.
FUNKISM: Cheers guys for letting this go ahead, I'll leave you to fish and gut polar bears. Talk soon.
Wow, don’t know about you but I definitely learnt more about the Eskimo Twins and my love for them grows once again. Would like to thank them loads for allowing this to go ahead and best of luck with the releases this summer. 27th June sees the drop of their The Red Triangle EP, be sure to get it! Get a cheeky first listen of Red Triangle here.
Any more questions for the Twins, hit them up on their myspace! They would be more than happy to sort you out with answers. Watch this space for more in the coming weeks. If you want to get even more interested in these guys, download their Wax:On Podcast.
so to continue on from the balearic disco theme brought up by the tiedye remix i posted a couple of days back, here's another journey into a destination unknown by somebody i first discovered on hyperbole. in fact it was youth's, a great new producer from brisbane, stevie nicks remix that really grabbed my attention and who fuelled the track by capturing pockets full of space and inserting them into every second that passed. he's hyperbole's boy which therefore makes him some kind of distant cousin to me i.e. show this guy some love yea? his latest remix of swiss indie rockers strandhotel, thanks jan gerlach, reinforces the balearic sound youth is so good at bringing to life. i just wish there was a dub, it'd be amazing.
i've always loved the presets for what they are, electronic music without the seriousness. it's all about having fun and not caring too much about the nit-picking but if you lose that flippant attitude, you'll lose the core of the modular duo. occasionally kim moyes applies this ethos to some original tracks by himself which have been notably remixed by the likes of d.i.m. and the midnight juggernauts. however this time he's executed a rework of the bag raiders' fantastic "turbo love" man these guys are still keeping it fresh. and they're filthy too, i love it. discodust posted the whitenoise and light year remixes whilst bigstereo brought the flight facilities one to light, so i thought i'd might as well complete the whole collection by giving you the kim remix. for an interesting twist don't forget to check out the "party machini" release.
the disco music of the late seventies and early eighties has influenced electronic music in so many ways. it's probably more clear to see now than in recent years with this meteoric rise of italo and balearic inspired back burners and genre-blurring party catalysts. so with soulwax working on production and au revoir simone on vox for aeroplane's highly anticipated debut album, the hype for disco is only going to increase. this rework here by the swedish duo tiedye, who are best known for their releases on the mega cool italians do it better label, is a masterclass in how to turn a moment of beauty into a format that reaches people all over the world. the original by dj kaos already earned its distinction but it's tiedye's magic touch which accentuates the passion and lust for some sex-fueled hours alone with a loved one. it's about sharing this great experience and enjoying the time as if it might not happen ever again. an unforgetable memory born from your synergy. this is my sound for the summer, and i'm sure it will continue to have the same impact many years on.
Why is it not that sunny today! However, on the bright side, I have a friend’s 21st birthday tonight and yes there will be a bouncy castle at it. I can only imagine the state some people will get into on that. Rule happens on the bouncy castle stays on the bouncy castle!
Just a quick post to say I'm still about! I've just been enjoying my summer and sorting out holidays etc. With the drop of the new Toddla T album hitting us last week why don't funkism give Mr. T Willy some more funkisses. I'll have some Count and Sinden on mine however.
today i'll have to warn you that this track is not safe for work, nor is it safe for home listening either depending if you still live with your parents. it's not because it'll punish your desktop's speakers or be a stigma for destruction, this remix will do that regardless, but more for the reason that aniki has introduced samples and soundbites that your mother will frown upon. perhaps even get you in trouble with your boss if you havn't got a cleavage. there are oooohhhs and ahhhhhs, even a nymphomaniac desperately asking for a cock to be put up her ass or something. i guess aniki could have done without these additions because the remix itself is a great opportunity to have a wobbly dance. this guy shouldn't really be news to you because of his release on lee mortimer's label but don't worry if it is, this is a great way to get into his works. check the first drop, boom. aniki, you're pure filth.
it was pretty difficult choosing my playlist for june but i think i found a decent balance between the disco, techno and bass heayy music i've been listening to recently. despite the main buzz for turbo coming from the likes of tiga, proxy and popof, i think "shaman" by guy j is their best release this year. definitely a great month for music coming up though with major lazer, boys noize and simian mobile disco hopefully providing you with a soundtrack to many summer parties.
last saturday saw the final of britains got talent and although i don't watch it, most definitely the best act won. my good friend amy showed me the winning performance on youtube and you've got to say them chaps from all walks of life have got mad skills. it's true though, britain has got lots of talent. and i don't just mean kelly brook and keeley hazell! in fact if you look around the whole 'fidget' and dubstep scene, most of the best and upandcoming acts come from the UK. fronted by hervé and his cheap thrills crew, there are also the producers on potty mouth, wearhouse and electric sushi to look out for. one of these, who we've been supporting heaps since we first wrote about how it wasn't safe to have a picnic in the woods anymore, is bass weazal and both of whom are intent on causing a chaos wherever you listen to their music. here's their latest remix, and it's aces.
