interview with arveene & misk
It's a well known fact at the Funkism headquarters that Arveene & Misk are one of our favourite discoveries of the past two years, and that's saying something considering we uncovered the joy of strip- volleyball. It's simple, you drop the ball you drop an item of clothing. Inevitably I was hyped to get a chance to interview Arveene Juthan and appeal to his naughty side, so it probably comes to no surprise that we gossiped about Ed Banger members, ginger ale and Lady Gaga's big donkey dick. Note that we did the interview at the start of May which is why you'll see topics related to that month. In fact a double note for those of you outside of the UK, "The Inbetweeners" is a show over here about four unpopular sixth form students who fail miserably at life and Susan Boyle was one of the stars of "Britain's Got Talent". The reason for the delay in getting this up was to have it nearer the release of the "Hells Bells/Blow Your Whistle EP" and future projects. Incidentally you can buy the track "Hells Bells" here (and watch the video) if you truly want to please the crowd but to ease the wait for their debut album, here are some remixes I think you might enjoy.

Mr. Oizo - Erreur Jean (Arveene & Misk Remix)
Husky Rescue - Shadow Run (Arveene & Misk Remix)
The Glass - Mad At You (Arveene & Misk)
Midfield General - Love Thy Self (Arveene & Misk Remix)
Deluka - Ike & Tina (Arveene & Misk Remix)
Ktodik - Green Park (Arveene & Misk Remix)

Pablo, Funkism: Before we get under a way, there's a question I really need to ask. Did you get to meet Mr. Oizo? I always imagined him riding a scarab, bodyguarded by little people bouncers. Am I close?

Arveene Juthan: We've not met him in person but talked a few times. He was cool man and really loved the mix. He even said he thought we had finished the track with the remix we'd done, which knocked me off my chair. To be honest it was a real honour for us to do it. He's the man and his production is wicked.

Pablo: Appearing on his "Pourriture EP" must have been a great feeling, how did that come about? I really wish the only way to contact Mr. Oizo was by sending a pigeon, owl or pelican.

Arveene: It's pretty simple really. I played with Pedro (Busy P) at the End a good few years back during my Underwater Residency and then I met Justice and DJ Mehdi. I kept sending them stuff when I had something done and then one day I got a copy of "Lambs Anger" on promo. Damian Harris had sent me a re-edit he had done of one of their tracks and initially Misk and I had thought about remixing and editing the whole album. We got 3 tracks in and sent them to Pedro as we were finishing them and the rest is history really.

Pablo: Damn I'm mega jealous! So for anyone out there who will be reading this for the first time and thinking why the hell haven't I heard of Arveene & Misk before, how would you describe your sound? Bonus points for using the word "lazer".

Arveene: I always find it hard to come up with a way to describe what sort of racket we're actually making. Sometimes we do disco, sometimes we make techno & house and sometimes we just love to drop some bass. So in one word, bass-dis-tec-house? And err lazer?

Pablo: I'm sure bass-dis-tec-house will be a staple in modern neologism by next year, don't you worry! Both you and Misk have been making music for years but how did you come together for this project of yours?

Arveene: Well I was working on some stuff with brilliant Dublin drum & bass producer Beta 2 and he was heading back to study full time and suggested Misk as a possible partner to write tunes with. We knew each other from the club scene before we met properly but with in 2 or 3 days of doing tunes, the flow was right and we knocked out some great bits. Misk is on it!

Pablo: A little birdie told me Erol Alkan and Liam Howlett a great fans of yourselves and along with the Ed Banger crew, you must have met many talented producers. Although who would you say was the best person you ever got the chance to DJ with?

Arveene: It's really hard to say bro. Erol and Liam have been an inspiration to me for as long as I know It's always an honour to play with Erol and Liam who have been my heroes for years. Getting to play with people like Darren Emerson and James Murphy have all been fantastic. Erol booked me to play after Soulwax at Durrr at the end and that was a special one for me. Also, playing before The Prodigy at HiFi Ireland in front of over 25,000 people was insane.

Pablo: Another little birdie of mine tells me you've worked together with Yo Majesty and, another one of our favourites, Detboi. Could you tell us more about these collaborations and any other exciting future projects?

Arveene: Yo Maj are dope! Detboi is someone I'm really proud of as a fellow Irish man. He's cool as fuck and has the FUNK big time. We'd like to do more collabs so watch this space.

Pablo: Please collaborate with Bill Murray and make my dreams come true! Well I also hear you've both been working on an album for a release aimed near August/September time this year. What can we expect?

Arveene: Well not sure it will be released by then man, just hoping to have it ready or nearly ready by then. Expect the unexpected and the expected. I know that's weak but I can't say much more man!

Pablo: Well I can't wait but I guess we'll have the "Hells Bells/Blow Your Whistle EP" to whet our appetites until then. Where can I get it?

Arveene: I think it will be on a few compilations. It's been signed to Global Underground Compilation as well as the new Gung Ho mix CD but all good digital music download sites should and will be stocking it come the end of May. We've a video in the pipeline too, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Pablo: So Arveene, tell me do you watch The Inbetweeners? Do you fancy Will's mum too?

Arveene: I don't have TV piped into my house so I've no idea who you're talking about. So I guess the answer is, no!

Pablo: No?! Well that's spoiled my plans, I was going to ask you to play the "Shag, Marry, Cruise" game with Will's mum, Lady Gaga (and her donkey dick) and Susan Boyle.

Arveene: I'd take Susan Boyle on a cruise, because she probably needs it. Maybe marry Lady Gaga because she's rich and shag Will's mum whoever she is?? Probably wouldn't shag her though I don't think.

Pablo: You do realise you've got a marriage's amount of donkey dick? Think of the health problems Arveene! But anyway say you had a quibble with Lady Gaga about music, who would you recommend to her?

Arveene: I'd recommend The Riotous Rockers for a DJ set. The Deadbots for Live. The Arveene & Misk remix of Zombie Nation for your iPod and a David Banner Cocktail: 2 shots silver patron, half a lime juiced, crushed ice and top up with ginger ale. Paradise.

Pablo: Thank you again Arveene, for being a great sport. Good luck with the album!

Only you would dare to ask them questions! I bet I'd just be boring and ask questions that Arveene hears 24/7 and he'd be like yeh whatever. Arveene talking about Lady Gaga and donkey dicks is genius Hah!

Yes all the ZN remixes were good but the A&M one I thought was the one of the best. Proxy remix was good too.
