Reaching The End

Our friend Art Whiplash has released Party Sex And Bullshit, a song that can make an army shake its booty.

Violent, but so good. So talented, so 17 years old, so good looking (i'm dying to have his hair).

Maybe if he likes you, he'll give you his hair-cutter's address...

top 50 albums of the year
pic: funkism

as the year comes to the close, it's time to have a look at our annual review of our favourite albums. it's been the year of 'the dark horse'. there have been albums ridden with promise, but ended up being the band aid treating a bullet wound, whilst some others blossomed into boundary-blurring examples of what 2008 has been about. i know there have been some whose expectations required more je ne sais quoi. more vigour. more stand-out winners. though, the year was never about having a crescendo.. instead we have a prelude for an array of future talent to come. see you may not have noticed but in our social-cultural environment, people are becoming more open-minded. we want fair trade. we want ethical practice. we want barack obama. this has just continued on into music. i know perhaps there are no superstars as seen in previous two years but hey that can only be a good thing. it seems now we are again appreciating music for what it is. a form of art. no longer is it about such adjectives as the catchiness but instead, we look at the construction, the emotive prowess and ultimately the purpose. we've realised different music occurs a different time. we have that electro madness for parties. yes technically sometimes it isn't that brilliant but when you're in la cartonnerie dancing next to this cute french girl and suddenly proxy's hook requires her assistance then well, you're in luck. the same goes for when you're at home, aching for your other special half and being evoked by the similarities garnered by lykke li's pitfalls in love. it's beautiful. and i for one, am a full supporter of this trend of open-mindedness. this genre infusion. it can only mean good things to come. anyway, just a few quick notes. this list consists of albums that were originally released this year so please don't be alarmed if you can't see bon iver or mgmt in the top 50 :)

from tomorrow starts our five day feature on what we believe (with help from you and our friends) to be the best albums of 2008. since it's comprised of quite a few large images i must warn some may take a while to load up, also, due to the google fairies not being able to pick up text in images, i'll be listing the full chart in this post anyway.

all i want for christmas
pic: yeahyeahyeahs

since it's christmas eve i thought i'd best get into the spirit of things. i guess i don't really need to tell you all how much i am a fan of the yeah yeah yeahs. named after a new york vernacular, they've produced a few of my favourite songs. ever! ohh how i love the acoustic version of maps. anyway if you're finding it hard to get into the christmas mood this year, just have a look at the yeah yeah yeahs. santa hats and everything. look at mr pig, mr dog and that froggy looking thing. look how merry they are! anyway, this track makes for easy listening. there are jingly bells and cheers for elves to sing fa la la fa la la. with karen o's distinctive vocals, what else more would you want. well apart from lots of presents! also, here's a christmas mix from our friends bass weazal. as i quote from them.. if you don't get anything good off santa this year, put this in your faaakin' stocking. merry christmas!

drop the pressure
pic: lucem

so in the past few days i've highlighted two examples of the freshest sounds to come from 2008; namely nadastrom and hervé. however, for me the year has to go to the almighty jack beats. i'm sure by now there's no need for me to introduce these two guys to you. they were there when white williams got violated. when we were wondering what to do with steed lord. when jack got jacked. basically they've been number one from the start and 2009 will be waiting with baited breath for their future productions. so what a way to end the year?? this project bassline remix is insane. i have to admit for the past month this has been on constant repeat. there's something about it that i can't quite put my finger on. that je ne sais quoi? well possibly because it sounds like it shouldn't work but it just does. see i have a certain soft spot for that stage just before perfect. i get bored with perfect. so at that point just before the optimum is what i find the most appealing. this is where this jack beats remix slots in for me. they haven't just used your typical perfect 'rave' sounds.. instead, i find myself having to climatise to the jack beats madness. hmmm maybe i didn't explain myself well but you know, just give this a listen and judge for yourselves :)

okay my little miss smarty pants of a friend just told me that the 'stage' just before perfect is in fact, not imperfect, but actually perfect to me. so perfect would be imperfect. apparently so. huhhh? also now i have that mylo track in my head.

oh love brings change when you need it
pic: cutthekidsinhalf

nevermind the jamie foxx lyrics, we're looking at a daniel merriweather remix by the essex raver that is hervé. so perhaps i don't listen to the radio much these days and i've no idea what the original sounds like. isn't he the guy who collaborated with mark ronson on his version of stop me? is it any good?? who the hell is ironik??? i also hear alexandra queen of x factor is going to be the christmas number one this year. as good as a singer she is, what happened to all the festive songs? it's not the same anymore. anyhow before i continue going off on a tangent... where was i? oh yeah, is there even a need to hear the original by daniel merriweather? i mean like with a hervé remix, i don't think i need to be listening to any other versions. i know yesterday i was talking about nadastrom but the count (anyone seen the film the count and monte cristal?) is the grandaddy of this scene... and this remix adds to the offspring on the family tree.

mas que nada
pic: nadastrom

okay so our top 50 albums feature is coming along nicely and i'm working on the aesthetics. i'm a sucker for paying attention to detail. anyway since we're coming towards the end of december it means reflecting on the year gone by. i guess one of the major successes to come out of 2008 is the booming fidget/jackin scene. we loved hervé and his cheap thrills, we dug deep for everything foamo and we most certainly went crazy for crookers. perhaps at the start of the year, the whole scene was mainly confined to the likes of the UK but now as the year comes to a close.. we find it spreading to each corner of the world. nadastrom come from the US and have just released their pussy EP. they too have a soft spot for combining hip-hop and house music. and why not? they both compliment each other so well sometimes. blaqstarr has been doing this for some time now, working alongside diplo and remixing surkin, so it was only a matter of time before these two worked together on a collaboration. did you know nada means nothing in spanish?? well this i can assure you is most definitely not nothing. it's kind of one of those songs where you can listen to it on the train and break out a cheeky smile because you know you're a cool little fucker. indeedy.

kris kross will make you... jump! jump!
pic: anaistique

it's that time of the week again and another start to the weekend. in fact the last friday before christmas! celebrations on cue? looking forward to the holidays?? i'll be making my way home any time soon but i do have the misfortune of a 2 hour journey :( although christmas party at moda anyone?? gonna be quality! so while i'm waiting for my train, i'm wrapping presents for my family. damn it's fiddly work. i got my mum some burberry london, my brother the new call of duty and my dad... well i'm still working on that. then there's tonnes of pressies for my friends too, it's going to take a while. anyhow, helping me get in to the party spirit is a lovely little gem from WoNK. perhaps you may remember me mentioning this not so long ago but it's here to post. yay! i'm guessing for most of us it's going to be freezing so how fitting that her bootleg is a firecracker waiting to explode. i hope you've got reason to be cheery this christmas but if not, i'm sure this will go to some way to help. the original always has a knack of putting a smile on my face so WoNK's transformation is a very much welcome addition to the funkism playlist. wait till you hear this out loud at night, it will tear the roof off. jump jump!

she's giving me the hot step
pic: vektorscksprojekt

remember when the last time i talked about astrolabe? the man in the moon? how his music made us feel happy? how we all should forget about the economic downturn and do a little dance in our bedroom? well he's back with a new remix for us. i seem to forget how this track reached our headquarters but i distinctly remember some bright lights, vigorous beams and perhaps there was a nebula involved. then from this spaceship that daft punk clearly would have been jealous of.. came these tiny little green men who hopped onto the funkism desk. i don't know why they were green, maybe they smelt of cryptonite. anyway, before they flew away they left behind this astronomical electro bombshell. i don't know if it can destroy planets mr vader but it certainly might upset your grandmother. maybe i should be a little more educated on cyndi seui but what astrolable does with this remix is pretty neat. if you can imagine grum but laced with the vocals from mstrkrft's debut. i'm sure you'll enjoy it this christmas if not keep you warm during your way into work or school. by the way, the whole strobe lights little green aliens thing.. i might have been slightly not with it. make of that what you will!

DL:

i guess while i'm here i might as well show you the way to a killer mix by djs teenage wolf and spin laden. perhaps i could write an airy fairy way of explaining the sheer loudness of this but their tracklist speaks louder than any of my words. boom!

Listen:
dj teenager wolf & dj spin laden - vicious pop digital mix

Tracklist:
dj spin laden - your booty
south rakkas crew - mad again (dirty freek remix)
scott cooper & andy george - jump & twist

higher state of consciousness
pic: southcentral

just a quick one from me today people. today's present is from the lovely justin kleinfeld from rephlektor inkorporated who brings us a south central track to celebrated the release of their debut album in north america. rather than me repeat my words, i'll be using part of a post i made back in july when owl of minerva was released in japan- so just in case you missed it here it is again. ive finally got my hands on the debut south central album 'owl of minerva' to be exact. and it's very impressive. ever since klaxons were adamant that there was an atlantis, that colour was not to be spared and that bands can rave too, there have been been many artists providing a crossover (a transition maybe) from indie to the current electro scene. i hate to pigeonhole genres but for descriptive purposes it's easier. one wave of this indie/electro onslaught came from the british band does it offend you, yeah! and well it didnt offend me, but more disappointed. after hearing the kissy remix of we are rockstars i was expecting good things but it seems the more you anticipate, the more likely you are to be let down. so perhaps the fact that south central creeped beneath the radar at the beginning has helped them because the album is brilliant. the opening track golden dawn creates a flurry of madness which hypnotises you into turning up the volume and with the rucking chorus of machines you stop what you're doing to appreciate the damage this may do to your ears. then we get to castle of heroes. 7:44min epic! despite the timelength there is always the anguish for more. and the brighton duo show their talent on the last track higher state of consciousness by taking the modern classic and doing just enough, not over doing it, to create a fitting crescendo. check out the video for it too. enjoy!

Barry White, organic wine and lots of baile funk!

Yes babes, I made a short entrance and then just disappeared. Well I didn't really, I've been reading FUNKISM but the fact that I have been down in a Barry White type of soul episode of my life I've been incapable of listening to house and electro what so ever. But I'm back now. The only ironic thing is that I have been to sick to even listen to music.

Since I puked almost the whole weekend (the effect of my friends organic wine) I haven't been able to party as much as I wanted to. Instead I've been listening to half of my friends 2 hours long hard style (!!!!!) mix, baile funk and several mashups. I have a fetisch for baile funk I think. I love the rhythm and how the bass
line annoys my neighbors.

Without the following tracks I wouldn't have survived my weekend:

NONEWYORK - Cocaine Bass line [ZShare]
Acid Girls - Bump, Pump & Spank to Swith on Justice [ZShare]
Crookers - Solteira Thunder Trouble (Edu K Baile Funk Mash) [ZShare]
Mekon ft. Roxanne Shante - YesYesYall (Sinden BF Mix) [ZShare]
The Sickest Squad - In31 [ZShare]
Barry White - My First, My Last, My Everything (I'm guessing nobody wants it anyway so...)

with a taste of your lips i'm on a ride
pic: retrodiva88

i know this past week things have been going slowly.. i must apologize! unfortunately i've kinda been swamped with work lately arrrgh. anyway, i've managed to hustle together some spare time before i get the train to leave geordie town. i'm trying to think of a topic to talk about other than christmas, but it just isn't happening. anyone in the mood yet? hmmm im still waiting for jingle all the way to appear on tv (by far arnie's best film). ohh and also bill murray's scrooged has a knack of getting me all festive! so there's this carol that harps on about giving gifts on each day of christmas. of course you're all my true loves but i've no turtle doves to offer. instead, from my goodie bag comes a treat from sebastien kenzy's side project- the lipsyncs. wahey! you may remember his infectious eighties rework that i posted a couple of months back? if you havn't checked it out already, i urge you to do so. disco house bliss indeedy. very much like his solo work, lipsyncs has a sixth sense for nurturing an inner groove. the ability of enhancing such an element comes all too easy for sebastien. the EP he shares with us is crammed with examples of why we're all addicted to this type of music. you know, the relationship with the standout track say is like that of a vigorous and enticing affair. i'm chained to it but i don't want to escape. whether it's the bassline or the old skool "let's get funky" vocals.. it all funnels into sebastien's potion for disco magic :)

heey guys im going to have to make this a quick one im afraid- literally i have 8 minutes and 43 seconds and that's if i can run down two flights of stairs within ten seconds. wish me luck! anyway so since i've come back from geordie town at the weekend, i've started having cravings for my quilty pleasures. and i don't mean girls aloud. i'm talking about my collection of vintage pop music. lately, if you dare press your ear against my bedroom door.. chances are you'll hear a bit of julien ribot or perhaps the disco queen that is jade. it's kind of quirky. my flatmates will sometimes be like what the hell is this but i don't care, i do love a bit of cheese from the sixties up to the eighties. i guess that's why i'm crazy for the re-edits that todd terje comes up with. stevie wonder, the emotions, chaka kahn.. you name it and in the future expect me to post about it. perhaps i've kind of (hugely) escaped the purpose of this post. well i do fully intend to use the whole of my time spare which is currently standing at 5 minutes and 2 seconds. whoops. so this is WoNK and she's becoming the princess of fidget house music. indeed. hailing from the midlands, she's signed to one of funkism's friends, crux records, and is one to watch. the lovely WoNK has kindly let us share a couple of tracks from her latest release which has quite possibly the best EP cover i've seen in a while. i love it. it's crazy as you would expect.. and so is the fidgitive remix. definitely one to check out and you can find the whole package on the ever dependant beatport. although while i currently have less than a two minutes to get this up, i urge you to point your ears towards her kriss kross bootleg. jesus, i can't wait for that to come out! did i mention there will be a bass weazal remix too? ;)

the shoe that fits
pic: mademoiselle-m

every now and then i'll get an email that will make me reminisce. usually, it's from a friend saying "look at this old photo of us" and then i will be like aaahhhh brings back the memories. good memories of course. ones that will make me wish i was a little kid again. you know, when at the time there were no responsibilities or hard decisions to make. perhaps there was never the need to be serious, just partake in harmless naivety. so when kazuya tamura emailed us his entire remix back catalogue and i saw a little rework of a cheeky girl band called the pipettes, i began to think back to 2006 and their debut LP called we are the pipettes. they never gained any huge success, nor was their album preached amongst the masses, but i just found them cute and adorable. after all i do have a soft spot for old skool pop music and the pipettes sounded like they were time warped out of the '60s- polka dot clad and everything. their remix album features the work of japan's lalory. the rework of the shoe that fits is nothing short of electronic pop bliss. yesss we can say that i'm biased but go check for yourself. what the world needs more of is things that make you happy which is exactly what this does. no more of this economic downturn talk, instead, let's all rejoice in the catchy vocals of the pipettes and production skills of lalory. and there's more! lalory's remix of digitalism showcases one of the competition's better efforts wielding a flurry of praise from it's listeners and then there's the technologic transformation into electric bomb, a secret weapon for many djs. so if you've just come back from work, give these works a listen to get in the mood for going out. i'm in newcastle tonight so if you're about, say hello! otherwise, hope you all have a nice weekend :)

if you go down to the woods today part. 3
pic: bassweazal

it's been a widely known observation for many a time now that when god created the world, he did not in fact rest on the seventh day. instead, he was busy away working on his ultimate creation.. bass weazal! consequently they became the destructive force behind the extinction of dinosaurs. there was no asteroid explosion, nor ice age, but just the chaotic onslaught from the weazals- which laid littlefoot and the rest of the land before time crew to rest. more famously still, the roman empire was not the result of a far superior army and neither did it's strength come from it's organised battle strategies. credit where due, julius ceasar unleashed the weazals' fidget bombs into europe enabling resisting countries to fall into submission. most definitely! nowadays, they can be seen avoiding the credit crunch and shifting the equator.. is there anything that these bass weazals can't do? i wonder?

what were your favourite albums of 2008?
pic: funkism

sooo it's the start of another month and time to get festive in time for the christmas holidays. although before you decorate your tree and sing carols, we would like you to get thinking about the year just gone. today, i'm not going to be posting a december chart (what are you crazy pabs??). hah well the reason is because at the end of the month, we are having one huuuuge beast of a chart... a list of funkism's top fifty albums of the year! we want your help in putting it together since it will be a mammoth task filtering through this years' releases.

we are looking to feature the thoughts and opinions of readers, friends and fellow bloggers so if you're interested in taking part, just let me or the others know. so far we have drawn up a provisional shortlist of albums but we are still open to suggestions. in fact, what we would like is if you could write a brief paragraph of your chosen album explaining why it deserves to be in the top 50 then email your recommendation to us. we will then pick our favourites which we will showcase in the chart for everybody all over the world to see. i'm really looking forward to seeing what people's favourites are and seriously, you can suggest anything you've been impressed by this year. for instance, it can be from fleet foxes to flying lotus. anything :)

please email your suggestion to funkism@hotmail.co.uk in the following format..

brief paragraph suggesting why it should be in the top 50:

you can email in as many times as you want! just as long as it's not scam links on how i can win an ipod or requests for naked pictures of me. that's unless your name is lianne mulberry (you know who you are madam). she likes to stalk me on tuesday mornings..

like london london want to go down
pic: purenses

i've always had fond memories of london every time i go. in fact, i try to make my way down as much as possible these days (did you know that once i accidentally clashed heads with girls aloud's very own sarah harding outside debenhams on oxford street??). she said my ears were cold.. not entirely the way i imagined meeting her anyway hah! i also remember back on new years eve '06 when i went to watch erol alkan and justice play at fabric. damn it was so packed and crammed but i loved every single minute of it. plus, if we're going to go back a few years, i can think back to when i was sixteen and me and my friends were waiting outside this venue where be your own pet (r.i.p) were playing.. the bouncers wouldn't let us in but craftily jemima and nathan slid us beneath the radar. good times! with today's current buzz in electronic music, london is as rampant as ever with many big names coming down to play every week. the fidget/jackin house scene should be no stranger to you all now and neither should the name trevor loveys after being championed on funkism so many times. this time he's back teamed with his buddy affie yusuf (who also featured on machine's don't care) to bring you some tragic magic goodness with their second release. the fakers/wiggle it EP is as huge as ever and crazier than you would expect. if you can remember back in my november chart, it featured the track fakers.. certainly one to get hold of! you can hear a medley of the release below but first, the lovely lydia from tragic magic sent in a track from the EP to share. thanks lydia! it's aptly called tear up london and it features an accapella from fergie of black eyed peas fame. soo you need to spice up your monday morning and get lost in the fidget trickery? give this a listen ;) the EP can be bought on vinyl or from beatport so please do show your support <3.
