I won't bore you with my rabblings this time. I'll cut a long story short, i had the privaledge of interviewing
KILL THE NOISE and grabbing a new remix from him. I saw him in town (Perth, Australia) a few months ago now and loved every minute. And for those of you whove some how not heard of Jake, I present, Kill The Noise...
Oooop hold up! First of all he has a new Jam for us. He remixed Vega, it is great, particulaly the intro :) Here it is in 320 glorrrryyyy...

And now for the interview!
First off thanks for taking the time to do this ! Lets get stuck right in , for those who don't know tell me a little bit about Kill The Noise. When did the project start, whos involved and how did you come up the best name in dance music today? My own humble opinion of course..ahaha.Well, Kill The Noise is a project that I started here in NY early last year. The name came to me in a dream.
You just played my home town of Perth Australia, i fortunatly got the oppurtunity to meet you and introduce myself personally. I read in an former interview with you that electro seems like a walk in the park compared to the drum and bass youve been producing for years under the EWUN guise. Well, it's not a walk in the park. However, it is a bit more relaxed. I mean it in the sense that it's something new to a lot of us so there's not as much expected from me as a producer/performer. With the Ewun project, I've been around for years and have associated with certian other artists. People show up to the gigs expecting a certian sound or certian tracks. When I get in the studio to write a drum'n'bass track I put pressure on myself to write a certian way. Being involved with electro and house has helped me to write better drum'n'bass and remember to loosen up in the studio.
I got into dance music considerable recently. Alot of my friends and other people i dj with in Perth City seem to have come up through drum and bass and then eventually dabbled in electro which seems similar to what your doing now ? Was it a natural progression from D&B to what your doing with Kill The Noise, would you say there are similarites in tone between all your projects, or does KTN represent a completely seperate portion of what your into musically?Well, all throughout my life I have listened to different types of music. Before Drum'n'bass I was into obsessed with hip-hop before that I was into rock, heavy metal, and industrial music. Now it's kinda come full circle. I really enjoy lots of different styles of music. I produce all kinds of stuff besides what I'm known for. Stylistically, each one of my projects are seperate I suppose, but as these projects come to fruition I've realized that I draw influence from them and their respective scenes and try to draw them closer musically.
Who are some of your favourite producers right now, and it is true your doing a collaboration with Le Castlevania soon, if so i think alot of people could definatly see that working out. Theres also rumours of collabs with maybe Villains, and Classix. Anything you can tell us about these?I have way too many favorites to name. The ones u mentioned above are certainly in my playlist. Off hand, Treasurefingers, Craze, Feed Me, Deadmau5 are also on the top of my chart at the moment. The rumours hopefully are true. We are all really busy people at the moment!
Lets talk about mixtapes. There was a time where a mixtape would be a rare thing to appear on a blog, but now it seems a little more common causing hell for us blog whores bandwidth.Your mixtapes are blogged about all over the internet. You seem to put alot of time and love into them, i feel mixtapes are a bit of a rush job for producers/djs now, they never feel to me thought out and important to the person producing them, but you seem to put alot of love into yours. Fair comment? What kind of ideas did you have in mind when making "T.I.T.O Vol2?"Well I like doin mixes because it gives me a chance to run thru my whole library of music and just listen to it. I think a lot of dj's (myself included) spend about 20 minutes a week running thru the blogs or their inbox and picking what they like and then the next day they are out playin em. Which is fine, I just like to take time out from time to time to find those gems, and really get to know the music I'm playin.
Where you instrumental in getting your friend and collegue Spor into making electronic music and him creating his Feed Me guise, is it something you both decided you wanted to do seperatly? No matter what he says, the answer is yes. And I get 20% of his gross earnings in 2009. This is an official contract since it's going to be printed on the internet.
Gear heads will exist, forever, in every scene, so for us nerds could you tell us abit about how to put a track together, and the various people out there, gear, you show love?Well, i hate to talk about my exact routine in the studio but i certianly don't mind talkin about production in the studio. The reason isn't because I want to keep my formula a secret, because honestly I don't think what I do is particularly interesting. I think as many high caliber artists that I've met, worked with, or read about kinda all say the same thing. It's more about you, and your concepts, your ears, your grasp on music, your understanding of your tools. I use mostly software, with very few exceptions. My most valuable pieces of equipment in the studio besides my ears and my brain, are my monitors (Adam p22a's) and obviously my computer (mac!). Those, I suppose are the mechanical equals.
Tell us a bit about Ludachrist. Here at Funkism we blogged about the new 3 track E.P you put up for free a while ago. Who's involved in Ludachrist. And do you take full responsibility for all the sweaty bodies and drunken hookups your BANGFEST mixtape will have caused at house parties all over the world?Ludachrist is a project that Knick from Evol Intent and I started earlier last year. It's steadily on the rise and it may interest some that BANGFEST 2 is well along it's way. We take full responsibility for everything that our music causes - except death and other negative side effects.
From your work with Ludachrist we might be prompted to assume that hip hop also has a place in your musical sphere. Is hip hop something youve grown up with and love, or something you just like to dabble with with Ludachrist. As you and our readers will be aware, hip hop vocals over bangers seem to be the hot tip recently (I aint complaining funkism, im a suckerrr for it alll). I personally would love to hear you collaborate with a hipe hop group/rapperm im a sucker for the hip hop/electro house thing i must admit. Ill get lil wayne on the phone yeah?Lil wayne is always welcome in my studio.
Recently you did a small tour with Treasure Fingers. Im a huge fan of Mr Fingers but the two of you doing a tour together seems an odd choice judging only on the output of original tracks and remixes released from the both of you. Stylistically they don't seem to match. Does Mr Fingers crank it up on a notch when he plays live, do you crank it down a notch, or was the tour all the more fun because of your differing styles? The closest i got to going was the podcast. Congratulations on your A+ for killing noise by the way..aha *pabs, insert schools out forever tour poster here*well TF and I have been working together musically for years under different guises. So for us to tour together wasn't a new thing. We've played shows together plenty of times in the past. Style wise we do play a bit differently, but part of being a dj I suppose is being able to play what the crowd wants. I think we both do a great job of doing that. The tour was a lot of fun and I really hope we have a chance to get out on tour again!
Speaking of tours how was HARDFEST? It seemed like it was going to be a huge event, i can only dream of playing rooms that big. Whats the best show youve ever played? Hardfest was a lot of fun. The show was great and had a really good turnout. Aside from playing overseas it was definitely in my top favorite shows I've played this year. Much respect to Gary Richards, Tom Davidson, and fam for working hard out there in LA to make something really special for everyone to enjoy!
And if theres a best show there must have been a worst show? Any major hickups? I think something happened at SHAPE but you covered well by grabbing the mike and shouting 'electro rewind' aha.haha, well shit happens. but the show must always go on. For every amazing show theres probably a handful of bad ones. No matter what you gotta get up there and play the best show you can cause you never know who's watching.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, and for Pabs to passing the job onto me as he knows what a fan I am of your work. Honoured to have you on our blog. Any details you can give Funkism on upcoming projects? Any sneaky details, exclusives? We're excited for you for sure. well DJ Craze and I just started a new record label titled "Slow Roast" that will be revealed shortly. I am working on a full LP as well as many remixes etc. Expect to hear a lot of new music in the coming months from all of us.
Thank you again. Please do come back to Perth soon, i danced all night untill I had to get my train back to the ghetto an hour and a half from the city.
Love!
Hickey.
